Up close and personal

2015

The photos were taken in August 2015 at Pécs railway station, where the authorities transferred refugees for about two months during the summer before taking them by train to Budapest. They usually spent half a day at the railways, where they received food, clothes, medical care, toiletries, and a good word from volunteers. The photos are snapshots of the few hours the refugees spent here.

What most of us in the country know about refugees is a very distant image from TV and computer screens. We are able to choose the content we want to hear; the facts that support what we already think about the situation. While we hurry to express our opinion on various portals, we always observe the events from a distance, from above. We can choose to get closer, to get our own impressions of the things going on around us, so maybe we can reveal the motivational factors behind decisions.
